Restorative and surgical procedures in dentistry go together. At our dental office, we have two oral surgeons who visit our office any time our patients require it. In addition, they are always on call to provide us with their point of view, their recommendations, and their diagnosis. With their input and expertise, we have been able to successfully tackle even the most complex restorative cases. At the Costa Rica Dental Team, we are able to provide a wide array of dental surgeries in our office. Here is a brief overview of each one.
- Possibly the most common surgical procedure is the tooth extraction. This can either be either simple or surgical. The simple extraction consists of simply “pulling” the tooth with applied force. Surgical extractions are slightly more complex. They involve the removal of teeth that are not easily accessible. This often requires an incision in the gum and the fracture of the tooth to remove it in parts.
- Dental Implants: Refers to the placement of titanium posts into the jawbone to serve as roots for replacement teeth. Dental implant surgery can be as simple as placing one implant or as complex as placing a full-arch replacement or even a full-mouth restoration with All-on-4 or All-on–6.
- Bone grafts: When there is not enough bone density to support an implant, synthetic bone mixed with your own blood cells is packed to regenerate the bone cells in the area.
- Sinus lifts: This is a special kind of bone graft performed only on the upper back molars. It consists of gently lifting the membrane that separates the sinus cavity from the jawbone to place bone grafts and thereby create bone height in this area.
- Block graft: This is a special kind of bone graft used to increase the bone width (as opposed to height).
- Gingivectomy: Removal of gum tissue to treat gum disease or for cosmetic reasons.
- Crown lengthening: Removing excess gum and bone to expose more of the tooth’s surface. This surgery may be required for restorative purposes, to make the crown have a better attachment to the natural tooth or to lengthen the tooth by several millimeters.
- Deep cleanings: Also known as perio scaling. It is a procedure used to treat periodontal illness. It consists of scaling the tooth from the root to remove calculus and plaque.
- Perio surgery: Refers to making an incision on your gums to expose the bone and perform a scaling at this level. It often is accompanied by bone grafts.
- Biopsy: Removal of tissue to diagnose malignant tumors from the oral cavity.
- Apicoectomy: involves the removal of the tip of a tooth’s root to treat infection and save the tooth.
