6 ways to make your dental visit less stressful

Do you find the idea of going to the dentist stressful? We understand that. There may be unpleasant memories, insecurities, or even downright panic when thinking of visiting a dentist. To some patients, this can deter them from seeking help for years. At the Costa Rica Dental Team, we have more than a decade’s experience in treating patients from all backgrounds, and we have found six elements that can greatly help overcome dental anxiety and stress:

  1. Choose the right dentist:
You must trust your dentist. Choose a dentist with enough qualifications and expertise. Ask as many questions as you need. You will be able to discern both knowledge and bedside manners based on how he or she answers your questions. A dentist who takes enough time and energy to walk you through your questions will certainly have the patience to work at your own pace. In addition, look for patient reviews online to verify the experience of other people. Finally, choose a dentist who is willing to offer a warranty for his work.
  2. Understand your process:
Everyone’s treatment is unique and every patient processes it differently. The best way to overcome stress due to anxiety is to understand what is going to happen. Look up information about your treatments online. Once in the office, ask your dentist to keep you informed on what is happening. For example, if you are getting dental surgery for implants, ask the surgeon what steps he will take before, during, and after he places the implants.
  3. Stop worrying about the cost:
Today, with the growth of dental tourism, high quality dental treatments are available at a fraction of the cost for equivalent treatments in the United States and Canada. These clinics are highly specialized and are used to treating patients visiting from other countries. They offer a fully bilingual staff, concierge services, and expedited delivery of restorations. If despite this you are still on a budget, be open with your dentist and set up a treatment plan organized by priorities.
  4. Pair the treatment with a vacation:
Do you like the beach? The mountains? Adventure? If you choose a dental office away from home, take advantage of the occasion to relax and engage in things you enjoy. This will help take your mind off the dental treatment. Countries that offer dental tourism also have a wide variety of options to visit on days you are not scheduled for dental work. Make sure you talk to your dentist before making any reservations.
  5. Implement relaxation techniques during your treatments:
Most dentist will not have any problem with the use of aromatherapies, music, or listening to your favorite podcast/audiobook. If this fails, do not be afraid to ask for the possibility of using sedation techniques during some of the dental procedures.
  6. Take it day by day:
This maxim also applies to getting extensive dental treatments or full mouth reconstructions. Every appointment will be different. Tackle challenges as they come and think about the future only to take preventative measures.
