5 Myths about Dental Implants Debunked

As technology advances in dentistry, the use of dental implants to permanently restore a missing or badly damaged tooth has become widespread. Thankfully, more and more people now have the possibility to regain their confidence in their smile; and with the rise of dental tourism, implants are now available to the average person. In spite of this, there are still several myths around the use of dental implants that keep many from taking advantage of the benefits associated with them. Here are five of the most common myths on dental implants and how they prove completely false.

Myth #1: Dental implants are painful.

Fact: Dental Implants look similar to a small titanium screw which is surgically placed into your jawbone. Nonetheless, the procedure is done under local anesthesia by a qualified and experienced dental surgeon. Most patients report some pressure during the surgery and mild discomfort during the recovery. In addition, the critical part of this recovery will take place within the first three days after the surgery, and your dentist will help you manage pain and inflammation with prescribed medications.

Myth #2: Dental Implants are only for the elderly.

Fact: Both young and old may have the necessity to replace a missing or extracted tooth. The best candidates for dental implants are actually younger patients. The only prerequisite is that they have a completely developed jawbone. The success of an implant will depend largely on the quality and density of the bones, which is typically better in younger patients.  Therefore, they generally have better success rates than the elderly.

Myth #3: Dental implants are not affordable.

Fact: While the initial cost may seem higher than other restorative options, dental implants often prove cost-effective over time considering their longevity and the avoidance of frequent adjustments or replacements. In addition, with the rise of dental tourism options, dental treatments are now more affordable than ever to the average American, as costs can be cut by 50 to 70% compared to USA prices, all while getting a vacation at the same time.

Myth #4: Dental implants require excessive maintenance.

Fact: They don’t require special maintenance beyond standard oral hygiene practices. Dental implants will need the same maintenance as do natural teeth: daily brushing, flossing, and dental check-ups every 6 months.

Myth #5: Everyone is a suitable candidate for dental implants.

Fact: Before proceeding to get a dental implant a thorough examination with dental x-rays (preferably a 3D CT Scan) is crucial. This will help your dentist determine candidacy to receive the dental implant with success. Factors that affect this candidacy are age, overall health, nicotine or substance use, oral hygiene, and bone density.
