4 reasons why your oral health is important

Oral hygiene combines practices whose primary function is to keep your mouth, tongue, gums, and teeth free from bacteria and infections. These practices include brushing, flossing and washing daily or even more than once in a day. Oral hygiene is a very important part of your overall health. Studies have shown that experiencing oral infections will negatively affect your well-being and that your overall oral health is directly related to your general health condition. Here are four reasons why you should make your oral health a priority.

  1. Your overall health is at stake. As mentioned before, there are studies that link dental problems with health complications. For example, it is known that gum disease or periodontal disease is linked with cardiovascular issues. It is also known that many systemic conditions like diabetes show their first symptoms in the mouth as blisters or infections. Other health conditions that may be linked to dental problems are sepsis, cancer and pregnancy complications. Cleanliness in your mouth and teeth will reduce the risks of developing systemic complications that will affect your overall quality of life.
  2. Earlier detection of dental problems. Part of a good oral hygiene is visiting your dentist at least twice a year. Regular checkups will allow your dentist to detect developing issues as soon as they start. Addressing these sooner rather than later can save you thousands of dollars and will prevent these from becoming serious.
  3. Prevents tooth loss and other conditions. Tooth loss is often linked to delay in action. Most dental problems can be solved before they get to the point of losing a tooth. It only takes commitment to oral hygiene practices and taking the necessary actions to correct the problem as it starts. Each tooth has a unique and special place in your mouth. You should strive to protect and keep your teeth for as long as you can. Missing a tooth, or several teeth will cause other conditions in your mouth that will require your attention and care, so the best investment you can make is trying to keep all your teeth healthy.
  4. A bright smile is a healthy smile. Brushing and flossing daily will prevent stains and plaque from opaquing your smile. A white smile is also indicative of overall health. In turn, smiling confidently and openly will greatly help you live your life to the fullest.

Now that you know why oral hygiene is important, here are some tips to ensure and maintain proper oral hygiene: Brush your teeth after each meal, avoid or stop smoking tobacco, eat a healthy and balanced diet, floss at least once a day, wear your nightguard, and go twice a year to your dentist for professional cleanings. Allowing a few minutes a day to your oral care will go a long way.
