4 most important cleaning methods

Most dental problems can be prevented with a thorough and frequent cleaning routine. Think about it; the best way to save thousands of dollars is to take care of your teeth since youth. This is because bacteria in your mouth can ruin your teeth in a matter of a few months or years, which in turn causes you to seek medical attention for remedy and then take a toll on your pocket. This is why a good cleaning routine can keep your teeth healthier and prettier over the years. The four most important cleaning methods are brushing, flossing, using a good mouthwash and a water irrigator.

Brushing your teeth is the most common and regular cleaning method. We should learn to brush our teeth correctly even from an early age. Brushing should occur at least three times a day, but professionals recommend brushing after each time we eat. The purpose of brushing is to remove the food particles remaining from our meals from around and in between teeth. This prevents the growth and proliferation of bacteria that eat away your enamel and cause cavities. Remember that you should use a soft-bristled toothbrush and brush both side to side and in an up and down motion. Circular patterns are also good. Do not forget the back of your teeth and your tongue.

The second most important cleaning method is flossing. This process is very important as it helps clean the small spots where the brush does not readily access. Most teeth have one or two surfaces that touch (or nearly so) another tooth. This is what dentists call a point of contact. These are a favorite spot for cavities because they do not get cleaned so often and food tends to get trapped here. This is why flossing is so important and should occur daily or at least 3-4 times in a week. Don´t forget that the floss should go a few millimeters into the gum and that you should clean in between all molars too.

Rinsing with mouthwash should also be a part of your daily cleaning routine. After manually removing the bacteria and plaque through brushing and flossing, many mouthwashes are sold with agents that help keep your mouth clean for longer. They also create an extra layer of protection against bacteria damage. Some even kill bacteria in your mouth. In addition, they come in flavors that will freshen up your breath and give you a clean-teeth sensation for longer. Ask your dentist which mouthwash he recommends for you for your daily use.

Lastly, the water flosser is a very important part of your daily cleaning routine especially if you have some complication using the manual string floss. If you have dentures or partials, the water flosser is also very useful. These devices spray a high-pressure jet of water that will remove any food particle trapped in between your teeth or prosthetic device. It works very similar to the tools dentists use when performing a professional cleaning. Like string floss, it is good to use at least once a day.
