Why Porcelain Veneers Are Used for Front Teeth

Front Teeth Veneers

One of the most common solutions used for fixing the appearance of front teeth are porcelain veneers. Costa Rica Dental Team uses veneers when teeth are healthy, but discolored, misaligned or chipped. Veneers can greatly improve the appearance of front teeth while improving strength.

But why front teeth? If crowns are a good solution for molars, why not just apply a crown when a front teeth needs to be repaired?

Not all teeth are created equal. They have diverse forms and functions. The teeth on the back of your mouth (molars) are used to grind and chew food. They are very tough teeth precisely because they have the hardest job to do. Then, there are the premolars, which don’t look much different, and their job is to hold food and also smash it. Then you have the pointy canines, two in each jaw. (The canines are the teeth that are exaggerated in movies when they are showing that someone is a vampire.) Canines are used to pierce, tear, or hold food.

Then we arrive to the incisors, which people call the front teeth. We have four of them in each jaw. They are used to incise or cut food. Whereas molars have a short, stout form, incisors have a shovel-like, thin form. This is because of their function. Think of molars as the grinding stones of a mill and incisors as a kitchen knife.

Now molars tend to receive less care because they’re in the back and they work harder, which is why they tend to get more damage than incisors. Crowns are great for molars because they adapt well to their wide base and their form. However, crowns are not so great for incisors because incisors don’t have a wide base.

Incisors get less damage compared to molars. They may get some small fractures or they may be chipped. In those cases, a solution that’s more appropriate to the incisor’s shape and function is needed. The best solutions in dentistry today are porcelain veneers.

Porcelain veneers are covers that are placed on the front of incisors. They are thin and resistant and give the incisor the strength it needs to perform its normal function. Moreover, the veneer covers any fracture or imperfection of the tooth and protects it from further damage. Lastly, dental veneers greatly improve the appearance of incisors.
